Paintings

  • Two three-quarter length portraits by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665), and his wife Elizabeth of France, Queen of Spain. Painted in Madrid in 1628-29. Inferior versions to the Althorp portraits are to be found in the Hermitage and other galleries elsewhere.
  • Among other pictures of interest are The Blind Harpist by Sir Peter LeIy; a half-length portrait Anne Botzheim of Nuremberg by Nicolas Lucidel [1527)71-1 590) from the collection of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough.

Furniture

  • The dominant feature of The Great Room are the pair of George III large giltwood mirrors designed by James Athenian Stuart for the Great Room at Spencer House. They have fluted frames with egg-and-tongue borders and beading surmounted by vases of flowers flanked by cupids in chariots drawn by winged lions, and en suite with those mirrors are a pair of side tables with mottled grey marble tops, fluted friezes and square tapering legs carved with Medusa masks and swags of flowers in full relief.
  • Pair of Louis XV black lacquer secretaires by Adam Weisweiler. These were supplied by Daguerre in 1791, and are stamped with the maker's name. They incorporate Japanese lacquer panels decorated with pagodas, landscapes, flower sprays and floral medallions and mounted with ormolu beaded and fluted borders with white marble inset slabs and open shelves. In the first window pier on the right is a Louis XIV style boulle bureau made in the 19th century. In the next pier is an original Louis XIV bureau mazarin inlaid in brass and tortoiseshell. This retains much of its original engraving on the brass and rewards close examination although the surface has been re-varnished.
  • Door handles in the form of human masks and plates on the doors incorporate the '5' for Spencer and are from the first flour of Spencer House, London.
