Starring Keira Knightley as Georgiana Spencer.
In cinemas from 5th September
Based on the best-selling historical biography by Amanda Foreman, The Duchess is the story of the beautiful and glamorous Georgiana Spencer, the most fascinating woman of the age.
Born in 1757, Georgiana grew up at Althorp and at the age of 17 was married to the older, distant Duke of Devonshire, intimate of ministers and princes.
While her beauty and charisma made her name, her extravagant tastes and appetite for gambling and love made her infamous. Georgiana became a fashion icon, a doting mother, a shrewd political operator and darling of the common people. But at the core of her story is a desperate search for love.
"Georgiana was a typical Spencer woman – strong-willed, stylish, and compassionate. She is certainly one of the more interesting of my ancestors – this year, when we put together an exhibition at Althorp to celebrate my family living here for 500 years, she was one of the key personalities that we built the exhibition around. She is pure Hollywood, so it's not surprising that her life has finally been made into a movie."
